What is a pip in forex trading?
A pip ("percentage in point") is the smallest standard price move in forex trading. For most currency pairs like EUR/USD or GBP/USD, one pip equals 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For JPY pairs like USD/JPY, one pip equals 0.01 (the second decimal place).
The pip value is how much one pip of movement is worth in your account currency. It depends on three things: the currency pair you're trading, your lot size (number of units), and the current exchange rate.
For example, a standard lot of EUR/USD (100,000 units) has a pip value of approximately $10. This means if EUR/USD moves 10 pips in your favor, you profit $100. If it moves 10 pips against you, you lose $100.
Understanding pip values is essential for position sizing and risk management — it's the foundation of calculating how much you're actually risking on every trade. Pair this calculator with SuperTrader's position size calculator for a complete risk management workflow.
